On an average day from mid-May to late October you will find anywhere from 50 to 300 guys out at Uluwatu. When the ocean does come alive it seems most of the “too cool for school agro chargers” disappear quite quickly. That’s when you know it’s starting to lean towards the serious range up at Uluwatu. Only a handful of locals and expats want anything to do with the real deal. They know who they are …and for the rest of the “chargers” hanging out further down the Bukit…you missed it!!!!!!

Last Night’s Sunset

Shell Beach Sunset Wave Left Beautiful Surfing Iconic

A Classic Surfwanderer Spot

It was one of those stuck at work but all I can think about is surf days. Lucky for me a nice SW was entering the SLO County window and the tide was approaching an unintimidating 1.5 foot low. Grabbed the biggest fish I could find and headed towards the water. When I got there I must have watched it for 30 minutes… wondering if I was wrong about the swell. Then one wave, and another, and pretty soon I was jogging back to my car. Snagged a few fun ones then got out to shoot this picture.

Giving of Thanks

Hard to believe it’s already been a week since the loss of a friend, a family man, and a Surfwanderer, Francisco “Franny” Solorio, Jr. The tragic event deeply affected those who were close to him and touched the lives of everyone, not just surfers, all over the world. I didn’t have the pleasure to meet Franny, but I know I’m not the only one finding it hard to look at the recent waves without thinking of him.
More Words & Photos from Liebs

Tragedies like this connect us. The loss of a fellow surfer forces us take a step back and re-evaluate what’s important, what we take for granted, and what we can do to, well, live better.
So I propose a toast… to Franny. Let this Fall & Winter be dedicated to him. From looking at his photos and hearing all the awesome things that people have to say about him, it seems that Franny would want nothing more than to see his friends score some waves. Surf knowing that he is looking down on us sending as many fresh lines in as we can handle.

And as we head on into this holiday season don’t forget to about those people that matter to you. Tell them they matter. Life is short and crazy and you really never know.

RIP Francisco. We’ll all catch one for you.

The family has set up a memorial fund to help cover final expenses and ensure his daughters future.

Donations are being accepted at the Rabobank located at 519 East Main Street in Santa Maria under the “Francisco Solorio Memorial Fund #9502-342252″.

A private celebration of life “paddle out” will be held at Jalama Beach on Sunday.

Keep Out!

The “Indian Summer” should be considered a new season in San Luis Obispo. Is it Fall? Is it still Summer? We can’t tell, but we don’t mind. Warm weather, warm water,  glassy conditions, and plenty of waves is just about all a Surfwanderer could ask for.

While we sit and watch the lines roll in, the northwest stays busy brewing up storms and pushing new ones towards us from 4,000 miles away. Another round please!

Aloha to you All,

Went to Robots today. There was a nice little swell running, with great shooting conditions. Seemed like everyone in the water was enjoying the warmth, waves and friendship. It was a very mellow Saturday. If you would like to drop in, click the link above or the ‘purchase photo’ link below and don’t forget what I always say, “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young”

‘Liquid Dreams’ by Scotty Carter

Blue Curacao

These photos are meant to be a part of the Celebration of Water, Light, And Energy. They are a representative of those dreams that become realities.

Scotty Carter loves the artistic element of waves and if he can dream it, he can create it. He is in tune with the natural mystic and hydrodynamic processes that bring us the waves we love. He is as much a scientist as he is a surf photographer and artist. He is one of the most knowlegeable people on the diversity of waves and how each reef, cove and beach bends the energy it receives from storms thousands of miles away to become our favorite surf breaks.

25 years of experience as a cinematographer and photographer have made him one of the world’s experts at waves. Scotty is an ego-less personality and artist, so it is really difficult for him to accept the praise that he gets or the writing that is done on his behalf. He is happy in producing wave imagery and art that makes the world smile. As a customer of his I can tell you that I love having his work in my house and consistently hear the same from customers.

Pacifica Re-Run: Seth Migdail

Corduroy Lines

Earlier in the week we brought you this September Showcase Shot from photographer Seth Migdail, with a promise that we would soon bring a full gallery. First, check out the original story below then click your mouse on the link that follows. Words and photos by Migdail.

“I had the crew, the swell was pumping and the winds were light offshore. As I drove down towards Pacifica, I could see the corduroy lines stretched out to the horizon, taunting me as I sat in my driver’s seat. My first glimpse of the pier from way above on PCH 1 was a perfectly clean left pitching into a tight, incandescent barrel, empty and beautiful. That was not my destination. I had planned to meet up with a few local rippers, and as I drove down, got a call from South African big wave surfer Frank Solomon to find out where I thought it might be good. I told him where I was going, a little secret spot just north of Pacifica that was sure to be firing. He was on the way with Joao de Macedo, another big wave surfer from Portugal (now residing in San Francisco) who I had texted earlier and rattled out of bed.

Armed with a 500mm on a mono-pod I spent the next two hours shuffling north and south repositioning myself as perfect a-frames peeled off left and right. The crew was killing it, stuffing into overhead barrels and ripping apart oily smooth faces. In between all the action I scoped the empty waves north and south of where I was camped. One thing I love about shooting in NorCal is that there is always epic scenery as a backdrop, and this spot is no exception. I had been trying to line this shot up all morning, but as the tide started to fill in, I kept getting pushed back up towards the cliff. I was pretty much at waters edge when I snapped this one, leaning forward a bit to get out past the jutting rocks.”

Please, if you know surfers in this gallery, add there names into the comments below so that they can more easily find their photos!  ’Shaka’ Surfwanderer

I’m thinking that this last swell, didn’t quite meet up to my expectations? I truly was expecting to see 8-10 foot roping waves with corduroy lines to the horizon! Over the past few days there were some spots that looked like that, but I didn’t see them, or just wasn’t willing to drive hundreds of miles on the chance of scoring. I do a lot of driving in this quest to find those idyllic conditions, burn up a lot of gas, gone through some tires and hit a deer doing $3300 worth of damage to my beloved Honda!

So this session at Robots, was the best one I saw in the last four days. The weather was perfect, ocean was glassy all day, and there were plenty of waves to be had by all.

Stand out surfing was being done by Jake Chancer, Cayson Peterson, Eric Knowles, Tim Puckett, Bernie Pigott, Dennis Rizo and a host of others. Check out these images, enjoy the show, and don’t forget what I always say… “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”

Aloha All,

Two sessions in one week at Dreamland, someone pinch me! Today I hooked up with Kilian Garland, who is fresh off the plane from the North Shore, where he scored some warm water bombs at Sunset and Backdoor. He happily stepped into 52 degree water with a big bulky wetsuit!

Well, the photos speak for themselves, Kilgar rips at Dreamland and any other spot he paddles out at. Kilian is one of my favorite surfers to shoot with. He is very spontaneous and you never know what he is going to do, as you can tell from this session right here.

Photo: Matt Aden // Supper Time

This was a weird day. I shot these photos around 1 PM which is insane considering how glassy the water was. The water was actually this color that day. I was baffeled. Water temp 74, air temp 70 so the algae in the water is growing like mad. Glassy Green tubes and NOBODY out. The thing about San Clemente is the wave are so fast that alot of really good surfers are groomed there. You make the drop and either pull into a quick tube or launch an air, not much time for anything else.

Photo: Matt Clark // Nova Scotia

This shot was taken while on a video shoot for Mikey DeTemple’s film Sight|Sound. We were up in Nova Scotia filming for a week or so and this was one of those moments. God I love it up there. It’s beautiful. It’s exactly what you’d expect. Endless empty lineups with dreamy landscapes, real wilderness. The backdrops are just so astounding, I’d love to go back in the fall when all of the leaves are changing, it’s probably one of the most beautiful places I’ve been to and I’ve been to many of the traditionally beautiful blue water blue sky tropical places.

There’s something about a cold morning with stiff offshores. Rocky coastline with pointbreak after pointbreak, and twisty roads along cliffs lined with Evergreens. The surfing going on up there is pretty amazing and there’s an incredibly tight knit community of surfers, when you’re in town, they know immediately so you can’t play any tricks on them. I love it up there, did I say that?

I was unsure where Uncle Jamey was taking us as we walked through the parking lot filled with rental cars of all shapes and sizes.  He promised waves to ourselves and I, in fact being a “tourist” figured he knew best, so I followed.  We strolled past the pristine, wave less beach crowded with ice chests and beach chairs and continued along, following a lightly worn trail that led us into a forest of thorn riddled trees and waist high grass.  We walked the trail for nearly an hour before coming out of the trees and exiting onto our own private beach, the waves weren’t big but they were perfect. We surfed alone for hours before finally heading back, again walking past the unsuspecting out-of-towners and the new batch of rental cars filling the parking lot.

Somewhere in Cali: Area 51

Photos: Brent Lieberman
To Purchase photos, view on an iphone or an ipad, or see full screen, see Photos805.com

Aloha All,

This particular session was at Area 51 this past October. Getting to Area 51 is not easy. First you have to have a sturdy four wheel drive vehicle, preferably with high ground clearance. Then, you don’t want to hit it after a big rain storm, as there are a river or two to cross, and the road in can get really slippery, muddy and miserable! Its a sorta gnarly spot out in the wilderness, so if you break down, bog down or get water logged you are in a bad place, pretty much left to your own resources, such as your friends, no AAA here!

With that said, as you can imagine, its always exciting to venture out there. Its doubly cool when you get there and see a couple of your adventurous Brothers out there to enjoy the solitude, surf and camaraderie! Everyone sorta knew the conditions were ripe for Area 51 and Walter and I were pleasantly surprised to see the Knowles Bros; Eric and Jason, Mike Fogg, Donovan Reeder, and Eric Soderquist there when we finally bobbed and weaved our way out there, after only having to remove a few tree limbs off the pathway! Sometimes kinda makes you wonder if some of your Bros didn’t place them there! The lighting was good, the winds were favorable and the Boyz were ripping. I hope you enjoy your ride to Area 51!

This photo sums up my relationship with this particular spot. It is an ominous place. The desolate beach, peppered with elephant seal pup appetizers, and over-looming rock formations, creates a constant feeling of unease. This picture was taken moments after a session in which the company of another surfer would have been welcomed with open arms.

The heavy waves, complimented by a unique back drop, allowed for some photos that portray the variety of emotions I experienced as I walked back to my truck. This place can leave you bitter, frustrated, and even scared beyond belief, but it only takes one good wave out there to erase any of those memories, and a return trip is inevitable.
