SeaCrest Oceanfront Hotel – Pismo Beach

Surf. Sleep. Repeat

Score great waves steps from this epic hotel in Pismo Beach, CA.  The Sea Crest Hotel has one of the best locations in Pismo Beach.  Right between the Pismo Pier and Shell Beach, it’s a hotel that I remember coming back to summer after summer with my parents after a few days camping in Big Sur.  The oceanfront views from nearly every room juxtaposed with the palm trees and hawaiian island charm leave you close to home (if you’re from California), yet feeling like you’re on an ocean journey far far away.  Newly refurbished, the hotel seems better than I remember as a kid.  The decor is a mix of modern, yet comfortable and homey.  The view from the pool screams dream vacation, and just steps down the private staircase to the beach are empty waves, and lots of radical caves to walk around in with the family, a great date, or your friends.  Play hard, surf hard, and enjoy hot baked cookies before bed at one of my families favorite Pismo Beach hotels: The Sea Crest Oceanfront Hotel.

It’s always worth the early morning rise and the crusty eyed sunrise walk down a jagged cliff during the Fall time in Central California.  Here’s a view of the rewards we’re accustomed to.

Somewhere in Cali…Abalone Reef

Somewhere in Cali…Abalone Reef

Yesterday I just had that feeling in my bones, that there would be good waves somewhere. So I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and immediately put on my weather radio to hear the buoys, something that I have been doing every morning for over 40 years! That little Radio Shack forecaster has made it a little easier for me to decide whether to head North or South, or even to hop back under the covers for some more shut eye, and believe me that is very easy to do at 4:30 AM!
Listening to my radio, I decided to head out to Abalone Reef. Driving through the canyon that early you are almost guaranteed to see something. This morning, I counted 13 Doe’s 5 Buck’s one Bobcat and no other cars driving in either direction.
Getting down to the Point around 7:00 am I wasn’t let down. There were plenty of waves and some bomber sets around 6′-8′ foot or maybe a tad larger. This session features Steve Price, Jazmine Ment, Tyler Staalberg, Pete Berkey, Vaughn Montgomery, Tony Romosanta and a few others.
It was a really fun and satisfying session for me. I hope you enjoy these images, and don’t forget what I always say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”

Somewhere in Cali: Going oFF!

Perfect waves.  Perfect!  Beautiful weather, crystal blue water, and perfect waves!

Photos:  Brent Lieberman

Yesterday Shawn and I left to head out to Abalone Reef long before the sun came up. All the reports on the Net were indicating that there would be swell, so we both were pretty excited to get the hour drive under our belts. Arriving at the check out hill, we saw really nice waves coming in, so we didn’t even stay there to watch for sets, we just packed up our gear and started out on a hike that I have made many times before. Getting down to the Reef were weren’t let down. The sets were well overhead, everybody was trading waves and hooting each other on. Just about every one in the water knew each other, and I knew just about every one on the beach, so what more could we ask for? A little wind yesterday would of been nice, just to blow the haze away, and also to cool down the stiffing hot weather that has surrounded our part of the state! The wind didn’t show up at all, but later in the session Bobby Martinez did show, and put on a world class exhibition of why he is one of the best Surfers around. Check out the photos, and don’t forget what I always say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”

The month of July was an exciting time for the Surfwanderer team as photographers from all over the United States and other parts of the world began submitting their shots to be featured in our Photo Showcase. Since then, we’ve published some amazing work from well-known photographers right on down to the yet to be discovered local guys who shoot for fun. Wine, Waves, and Beyond

Wine, Waves and Beyond

By Dave “Mouse” Friesen

If you haven’t already heard about Wine, Waves and Beyond in San Luis Obispo, it is a classic four day event that includes surf movies, a longboard contest and wine events that celebrate the best of San Luis Obispo County. All Proceeds go to support the Association of Amputee surfers (ampsurf), a non- profit organization started by surfer Dana Cummins, an amputee and veteran himself. Ampsurf supports the veterans who have served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan and are coming home looking for a way to feel whole again.
This year the events started with a surf movie night. Two movies were shown at the Fremont Theater in San Luis Obispo on May 31st. Nike’s “ Leave a Message”, an all women’s surf film that combines the hottest female surfing outside of the competition circuit, and Keith Malloys, “Come Hell or High Water”,- a film that explores the sport of body surfing and the pureness that comes from riding a wave. Keith Malloy was also in attendance at the theater.

The second event was held at the Cliffs Resort in Shell Beach on June 1st. The Barrel to Barrel as it was called had live music, a silent auction and over 35 visiting wineries and breweries.
The third event was the Firestone Brew Masters on June 2nd. It had five chefs from around the county. They created five different courses, each paired with a different Firestone brew. But, be careful, the best way to get home after the second and third events should be by cab or sober driver only.

The last event on June 3rd was completed with a longboard only surf contest. Surfers from all over the state showed up for this. Some notable surfers who showed were San Diego’s Jesse Timm, Santa Barbra’s Trae Candy and even women’s surfing legend Margo Oberg was there to support this benefit. But, the best part about this contest is that in each amateur division the winner received 250.00 bucks and a glass blown trophy by Ted Emrick. This year also had some fun surf: 3 to 4 foot with sun shining and glassy conditions most of the day. The right and left peeks provided some long rides and great surfing. Other events near by that went along with the surf contest, A classic VW car show, live music, BBQ and a volleyball exhibition were all fun to see.

The surf contest provided an exciting and friendly atmosphere so much that everyone seemed to be on a high, especially the amputee surfers. These four benefits showed the true meaning of our sport and will continue to give the men and women who served our country the stoke they needed to move forward in their lives. The four day event is a must see, so next summer mark Wine, Waves and Beyond on your calendar and we’ll see you there.

List of the 1st place winners:
Grand Masters(45+): JP Mclelland
Mens Masters(30-44): Charlie Howland
Mens Open(18-29): Joe Rickenbaugh
Jr. Men(13-17): Trae Candy

Lucky Man

I am a lucky man, or should I say a very lucky man! I made it through puberty with out any emotional disorders, that I am aware of! I got turned onto Surfing at the age of 12 and in my 13th. year, my parents decided to take the family on vacation to Hawaii for the two week Christmas break, which richly deepened my love to surf, for the ocean, all the creatures within and that Beach boy lifestyle that was flourishing during the sixties. I was lucky that my Mom was also very supportive of myself and my friends passion for Surfing and would drive us to the beach any time I asked. I learned how to Surf at the Santa Monica Sport Fishing Pier and by age 14 had graduated up the coast to surfing that amazing right hander at Malibu regularly, and was a witness to that whole scene for many years following. I was very lucky to survived the sixties with all the craziness, protesting the war in Vietnam, drugs and experiments therein. Living in Dogtown there were plenty of creative souls to surround yourself with, world class Surfers, drug crazies, skid row bums, subversives, and life in general, for me, those days in Santa Monica/Venice were a daily experiment in survival, and the foundation for my growing passion of photography. I am a very lucky man, because my High School sweetheart has stayed with me through all this turmoil and craziness, we have raised two beautiful children together, survived the bumps on the road that life has a way of throwing at you, and still is supportive of my passions during the past 45 years! I have been lucky enough to acquire some of the worlds best gear to explore my world of photography; the Surfing, Beaches, characters, the mountains, deserts and the flora and fauna existing in these environments. I hope you enjoy viewing my world! Aloha….Liebs
