Hawaii…Photo: Dylan Gordon  dylangordon.com

Since the beginning of the new year, Surfwanderer has met many great photographers who’s eye for something interesting through their surf photography will have them showcasing their photography to many surf magazines in the near future.

Dylan Gordon has just turned 21, literally a night or two ago, and between myself and the other editors of Surfwanderer.com, we are blown away by his ability to capture color, and the power of real life in his photos. Here’s a short sample. If you don’t know Dylan Gordon’s work yet, trust me, you will! As a photographer myself, this guy totally inspires me through his work…oh ya, he’s a totally killer guy too!

Having just graduated from Brooks Institute of Photography, and doing an internship with Chris Burkard, Gordon brings both the knowledge of color and the photography business to his work. He’s already been hired by some big time surf industry leaders to do product photo shoots and color work editing for advertisement campaigns. He’s the real deal, and we’re proud to be working with him.  He just finished a month in Hawaii shooting with the Maui boys, and has now just touched land in Canada for a month of swell.  Check back soon and we’ll try to journal some of his adventures.

Surfwanderer Interview: Mike Horton

surfwanderer.com and summerrecap.com
Bio
I am a young surfer, winemaker, traveler, and person who is generally happy about life and where it takes me. I feel blessed to travel the world surfing great waves, making delicious wine, experiencing new cultures, and meeting amazing people. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of doing those four things.

Mike Horton's website and surfwanderer.com

Explain your love of your sport so that someone who doesn’t surf/skate/snowboard can understand your connection/obsession with it.
The connection between surfer and ocean is so transcendental it’s difficult to describe. Every surfer will quickly admit they are constantly challenged by the ocean. That’s what makes surfing so unique, the ocean is such a variable playing field; no two breaks, or even sessions, are the same. I’m obsessed with surfing because I’m just at peace in the water and always have a smile on my face when I’m on a surfboard. I’m that guy that’s laughing and chatting with everyone in the lineup. Ask anyone I know, I’m always in a good mood after a surf regardless of whether the waves were any good!

What about Summer Recap makes you stoked to build you’re own online presence for others/sponsors to see?
Exposure is everything in the surf industry, it’s hard to make a name for yourself. I want to be an ambassador for surfing through my photographs, writing, and experiences, someone that people look to for inspiration. I think Summer Recap’s format is very user-friendly, it only takes a few minutes to setup a site, and it works great with mobile technology. I created my personal website, http://www.thedriftingwinemaker.com, three years ago and I feel like I’m still constantly working to perfect it.

Aloha All.
Yesterday I was at home just resting in my easy chair, after a long morning of shooting, editing and posting, when my phone rang, and I must of been asleep, because I was sorta dreaming and the mornings waves, colors and textures. At the other end of my cell was Lorin Anderson calling and asking me if I was up for another shoot out at Dreamland, well I was sorta tired and told him to call me when he got out there and looked at it. I was a little concerned because it was a big negative tide, and I have never shot at that low of tide. Lauren rang me up about 45 minutes later and said it was dead oil glass, and he just saw a really long tube, and that there was nobody there, so it was on! I got in my car and blasted out there. Ben Peet showed up and one local kid as well, who I didn’t catch his name. The waves were good, the action was great, and to top it all off, one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. This morning all the indicators online were showing the beginning of a new NW Swell, so off early to check out the Ocean. After driving for a while, I anxiously arrived at Dreamland, and I couldnt believe my eyes, about 6′ sets or better, offshore wind blowing, beautiful sun, and….no one there! After watching for about a half hour, I decided to just shoot some empty line up shots, as i was getting ready, one Surfer and one Bodyboarder went out in two different peaks. They were having a hard time with the consistent swell and sneaker bomber sets. I did however catch them both on at least one wave! This is why this spot is know as Dreamland, because you never know if its real or not, sometimes I dont know if Im even awake! I often see these kind of waves in my dreams, and sometimes for real! So, you figure it out, are these real, or is it just Dreamland! Always remember what I say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young….Da Lieb”

Aloha to you All,

Went to Robots today. There was a nice little swell running, with great shooting conditions. Seemed like everyone in the water was enjoying the warmth, waves and friendship. It was a very mellow Saturday. If you would like to drop in, click the link above or the ‘purchase photo’ link below and don’t forget what I always say, “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young”

Shawn and I rondevued at Dreamland to shoot some photos of his new Threedom by JVP sled. It is a really really colorful board, and I expected it to look very cool in photos. The waves were pretty good, about 3-5′ and pretty glassy, however it was very foggy which usually always kills the contrast. At one point it got so foggy and almost drizzling that I almost packed it in. If I wasn’t being paid the big bucks, I would of tossed in the towel!! But a photog has to do what a photog does. This place sits on a very wild part of the coast, and you never know what to expect, or what you will see. At one point there was all this commotion in the water and an Elephant seal popped up a few times with a halibut in its mouth, shaking its head and ripping the flounder to shreds, as all the birds were invading the area for the scraps……good thing it was only an Elephant seal! All in all, I think we all had a great time. I hope you enjoy these images….remember “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young….Da Liebs”

I’d Rather Be Surfing…Somewhere in Cali

I have been coming out to Abalone Reef since 1967, and the one thing that I have learned about this spot is, you just never know what you will find from day to day. In 1967 part of the road in was still dirt. Its still a very wild place. Today on the ride in Eric and I saw a beautiful four point Buck next to the road, just grazing. So, we of course stopped and watched him for a few minutes, and he didn’t seem worried one bit, he was still eating as we drove off. Its not that rare to see wild pigs grubbing on the beach.

The walk in is still long, and during the Winter at high tide, some times dangerous. Last Winter, I literally got pinned up against the cliff and the ocean surged half way up my back and almost sucked me and all my photographic gear away, luckily my pack is water resistant, and I was somehow able to keep my grip, and I didn’t suffer any damage to my stuff, just my pride. I turned and told the two guys walking in with me, who were also pinned against the cliffs (in their wetsuits) that was it and I was turning back, and they urged me on, and I was happy I did, as the waves were great.
Today Eric and I weren’t disappointed either. There was a bit of South Swell, some off shore winds, great sun and colors, so I was really stoked to be a photographer, those elements make my work so much easier. Today’s crew consisted of; The Knowles Brothers; Eric and Jason, Rod Herman, Alan, Blake Reynolds, Randy Stoker,Tony Romosanta, Mike Kurilich, Jake Chancer, Mitch Dallas, John Moberg and few others that made the hike in to reap the fruits that Abalone Reef sometimes dishes up. I hope you enjoy looking at these images, and remember what I always say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young….Da Lieb” Aloha Nui Loa.

I’m thinking that this last swell, didn’t quite meet up to my expectations? I truly was expecting to see 8-10 foot roping waves with corduroy lines to the horizon! Over the past few days there were some spots that looked like that, but I didn’t see them, or just wasn’t willing to drive hundreds of miles on the chance of scoring. I do a lot of driving in this quest to find those idyllic conditions, burn up a lot of gas, gone through some tires and hit a deer doing $3300 worth of damage to my beloved Honda!

So this session at Robots, was the best one I saw in the last four days. The weather was perfect, ocean was glassy all day, and there were plenty of waves to be had by all.

Stand out surfing was being done by Jake Chancer, Cayson Peterson, Eric Knowles, Tim Puckett, Bernie Pigott, Dennis Rizo and a host of others. Check out these images, enjoy the show, and don’t forget what I always say… “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”

BLUE MOON SURF

Leaving the house this morning at 6AM, that big ole Blue Moon was still very bright in the black sky as I drove out to check the surf at Robots. It somewhat of a long ride, so I had plenty of time to reflect how crappy it was yesterday when Eric Knowles and I went out there at the crack of dawn. Eric didn’t even want to surf yesterday which is extreme for “Da Brah.” The waves were super small, broken up by the wind, breaking right on shore and just plain hideous.

So this morning I kept telling myself, well, the buoys have jumped up and the swell must certainly have arrived? Driving through miles of vineyards, up and down small mountains, through miles of beans, hay, oats, walnuts and the such, I just kept thinking, boy, I hope I don’t get skunked two days in a row! Making the climb up one last large mountain range, you can get a glimpse of the ocean from about 8 miles off, seeing it sunny out there was a good sign. Having driven out to Robots literally maybe a thousand times since 1967, you just never know, but sunny is always a good thing. Cresting the last final hill to see the waves, and, I’m stoked, I see plenty of waves, slight off shore winds and only three guys out. I’m on it. I get my 50 pound pack on, grab my tripod and make the 20 minute hike out there.
I wasn’t disappointed. After an hour or so, a whole bunch of my friends showed up, so, for me, its was a quite enjoyable shoot. It wasn’t perfect. but after yesterday, the surf was really pretty, my Bud’s were all charging and everyone seemed to have a great time.
I hope you enjoy seeing what I saw today. Always remember what I say; “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb” Aloha Nui Loa.

Somewhere In Cali: Gem of the Coast

This is a tribute to my friend Shawn Schukraft who has been able surf this incredible wave for the last twelve years, that is literally off limits to most of the Surfing World. First and foremost, I would like to thank Shawn “Shuey” Schukraft who for the past three years, has shared his backyard with with his friends selflessly and charged these waves with little concern for board or back! It is because of Shawn, that Steve and I were able to shoot this breathtaking wave, seeing small foggy days, mid sized perfect days and double to triple overhead macking conditions. We were also able to become friends with some of Shawn’s Mates; Kevin Hamor and Will Dean, who also charge with reckless abandon, busting airs and pulling into sand dredging gaping tubes of any size!

This gallery highlights images from about 25 different sessions, spanning almost three years, under every kind of conditions. Some of the other Surfers you will see here, besides Shue, The Hamor and Willy are: Bobby Martinez, Dane Reynolds, Shaun Tomson, Strider Wasilewski, Dennis Rizzo, Nick Rosza, Jesse Motta, Noah Erickson, Jake Kelly, Matt McCabe, Sam Cammack, Eric Knowles, Rick Gannon, and “Braddah” Adam Dangleman.

The other Star of this gallery would of course, be the magnificent Wave itself. It sits on a very special niche of the coast where there is no Continental Shelf, so the wave comes in from very deep “Blue” water, and when the swell hits the sand bars, it will almost invariably alway jack up double size, making the take offs very challenging and ultimately picturesque.  Sometime the backwash will take a five foot wave and cause it jump up and present itself as a ten to fifteen foot nightmare. Other days, the Wave will be a flawless perfect barrel peeling for a hundred yards, sometimes it will be a horse shoeing warped challenge that you will change 90 degrees of direction, then, like most beaches, there were those days when it was two to three foot, foggy, onshore and dribbling!

Through all this, Shawn, Steveo and I were always laughing, hooting and enjoying this gift that nature has presented as Laguna’s, or as I called it in the early days; Shawn’s Backyard, even on the occasion’s when Steve and I both donated our “pound of flesh” crossing the rocks! I dont know what kind of rocks they are, but they rival the A’a lava in Hawaii!

Well, the inevitable has happened, Shuey has moved on to a different House, with a different back yard, which doesn’t have this special Gem within its property lines. Being the Dreamer that I am, I will always look back to these days shooting out there, and use some of these waves as a benchmark to what I consider great waves. I will also, always hold these friendships near and dear, and look forward to shooting with my friends again, at other Gems along this Coast.

A Run Across the River

If you are on a smart phone or tablet:  Click Here to View

This particular day, Walter, Ricky and I four wheeled into Area 51.  We were a little delayed waiting for a good run across the river, trying to not get caught by the tide, which would have put a real wrinkle into our day and Ricky’s Habitat, an all wheel drive minivan all terrain home away from home! In that habitat’s usual contents included: three or four surfboards, as many wetsuits, two skateboards, a couple of ukeleles, hot water, cold water, cliff bars, camera gear, a sleeping bag, binoculars, a camp stove, a tent, etc., etc. The guy is always prepared!

We met up with a few other the other Boyz for a great session. The waves were really fun, the lighting excellent, and the boyz were rippin’.   Along with Ricky and Walter were Daron Mafi, Robbie Dominguez, and Hugh Soderquist.  It’s really nice when you can four-wheel drive into this place we call Area 51 and surf with just a couple of friends.  It takes some commitment, but sometimes it’s totally worth it.

I hope you enjoy your trip to Area 51!

Surfwanderer Spotlight: Dan Hamlin

Shawn Tracht photographing Pismo beach surfers

Story and Photo:  Shawn Tracht

Every online magazine carries a huge responsibility when they promote individuals and businesses in their features.  Surfwanderer is no different.  So with that being said, in my time as a writer and a voice in the surfing community, it is important for me to promote good, and promote living a healthy, honest, noble lifestyle.  This isn’t easy because of the difficulties of life and what we all go through along the way; however, that being said, because the choice is mine as a writer for Surfwanderer.com, my choice to promote and showcase surfers in this world who are worth looking up to is what is important to me.  Danny Hamlin could be no better choice.

A model citizen, a caring soul, one of the nicest people I’ve ever met, and one of the top rippers no matter what beach he shows up at in California, Dan Hamlin is a person who all moms and dads should point to on the beach when they’re telling their kids, “look at that guy over there little Johnny or Jane, that’s the model of a person who, if you end up like that, would make me proud.”

Nobody’s perfect, and I’m sure Dan would be the first to agree, and we aren’t holding him to perfection because that’s outright…well, dumb.  However, the words I think of when I think of “Hammy” are  positive, and inspirational.  So to that, enjoy a little of his ripping here, and spend a couple minutes checking out his blog and the sponsors he’s chosen to further push his cause.  Dan’s blog:  danhamlinwrites.com,  Esteem Surf Shop, Jedediah Clothing, and Roberts’ Surfboards.

Shaka,

Surfwanderer
