Somewhere in Cali…
Aloha All,
Went for a cruise this morning up to Picnic Tables. According to the buoys earlier, it sounded like the swell had dropped. After riding up the coast and getting to the spot, I noticed that it really had not dropped enough for anyone to venture out and challenge these 8-10′+ BOMBS! This place is serious. These waves sometimes break on sandbars that are only three feet deep! I hope you enjoy these images and keep dreaming about that perfect session, as I do! Scan through the pictures right here and you stay cozy at home and can avoid the detonation.

Yesterday I was sitting in my easy chair, taking a little break after spending almost six hours scanning and editing images, my neck was pretty sore, then my phone rang and it was Shawn frothing about HoChi’s going off. Being there was only about two and a half hours of day light left, he was urging me to get on my horse and jamb as fast as possible. So peddle to the metal! When I got there I was presently surprised, the waves were really good, the lighting exception, and the surfing action was hot. Standouts in this session were; the Soderquist Bros, Eric and Huey, Donovan Reeder, Shawn and the kid with the last name Berks. The colors were really deep and the back lighting made for some beautiful shooting, this all topped off with an very colorful sunset. What a great way to start the New Year. Enjoy the images and don’t forget my mantra “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young….Da Lieb

Aloha All.
Yesterday I was at home just resting in my easy chair, after a long morning of shooting, editing and posting, when my phone rang, and I must of been asleep, because I was sorta dreaming and the mornings waves, colors and textures. At the other end of my cell was Lorin Anderson calling and asking me if I was up for another shoot out at Dreamland, well I was sorta tired and told him to call me when he got out there and looked at it. I was a little concerned because it was a big negative tide, and I have never shot at that low of tide. Lauren rang me up about 45 minutes later and said it was dead oil glass, and he just saw a really long tube, and that there was nobody there, so it was on! I got in my car and blasted out there. Ben Peet showed up and one local kid as well, who I didn’t catch his name. The waves were good, the action was great, and to top it all off, one of the best sunsets I have ever seen. Yesterday I just had that feeling in my bones, that there would be good waves somewhere. So I woke up at 4:30 in the morning and immediately put on my weather radio to hear the buoys, something that I have been doing every morning for over 40 years! That little Radio Shack forecaster has made it a little easier for me to decide whether to head North or South, or even to hop back under the covers for some more shut eye, and believe me that is very easy to do at 4:30 AM!
Listening to my radio, I decided to head out to Abalone Reef. Driving through the canyon that early you are almost guaranteed to see something. This morning, I counted 13 Doe’s 5 Buck’s one Bobcat and no other cars driving in either direction.
Getting down to the Point around 7:00 am I wasn’t let down. There were plenty of waves and some bomber sets around 6′-8′ foot or maybe a tad larger. This session features Steve Price, Jazmine Ment, Tyler Staalberg, Pete Berkey, Vaughn Montgomery, Tony Romosanta and a few others.
It was a really fun and satisfying session for me. I hope you enjoy these images, and don’t forget what I always say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”

This morning all the indicators online were showing the beginning of a new NW Swell, so off early to check out the Ocean. After driving for a while, I anxiously arrived at Dreamland, and I couldnt believe my eyes, about 6′ sets or better, offshore wind blowing, beautiful sun, and….no one there! After watching for about a half hour, I decided to just shoot some empty line up shots, as i was getting ready, one Surfer and one Bodyboarder went out in two different peaks. They were having a hard time with the consistent swell and sneaker bomber sets. I did however catch them both on at least one wave! This is why this spot is know as Dreamland, because you never know if its real or not, sometimes I dont know if Im even awake! I often see these kind of waves in my dreams, and sometimes for real! So, you figure it out, are these real, or is it just Dreamland! Always remember what I say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young….Da Lieb”

These images are some of my favorites from the last 45 years. Some are from film and may be a bit better for wear, but are still cool to look at. They go back to around 1967. Enjoy!

Yesterday Shawn and I left to head out to Abalone Reef long before the sun came up. All the reports on the Net were indicating that there would be swell, so we both were pretty excited to get the hour drive under our belts. Arriving at the check out hill, we saw really nice waves coming in, so we didn’t even stay there to watch for sets, we just packed up our gear and started out on a hike that I have made many times before. Getting down to the Reef were weren’t let down. The sets were well overhead, everybody was trading waves and hooting each other on. Just about every one in the water knew each other, and I knew just about every one on the beach, so what more could we ask for? A little wind yesterday would of been nice, just to blow the haze away, and also to cool down the stiffing hot weather that has surrounded our part of the state! The wind didn’t show up at all, but later in the session Bobby Martinez did show, and put on a world class exhibition of why he is one of the best Surfers around. Check out the photos, and don’t forget what I always say “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”

Shawn and I rondevued at Dreamland to shoot some photos of his new Threedom by JVP sled. It is a really really colorful board, and I expected it to look very cool in photos. The waves were pretty good, about 3-5′ and pretty glassy, however it was very foggy which usually always kills the contrast. At one point it got so foggy and almost drizzling that I almost packed it in. If I wasn’t being paid the big bucks, I would of tossed in the towel!! But a photog has to do what a photog does. This place sits on a very wild part of the coast, and you never know what to expect, or what you will see. At one point there was all this commotion in the water and an Elephant seal popped up a few times with a halibut in its mouth, shaking its head and ripping the flounder to shreds, as all the birds were invading the area for the scraps……good thing it was only an Elephant seal! All in all, I think we all had a great time. I hope you enjoy these images….remember “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young….Da Liebs”

I have been coming out to Abalone Reef since 1967, and the one thing that I have learned about this spot is, you just never know what you will find from day to day. In 1967 part of the road in was still dirt. Its still a very wild place. Today on the ride in Eric and I saw a beautiful four point Buck next to the road, just grazing. So, we of course stopped and watched him for a few minutes, and he didn’t seem worried one bit, he was still eating as we drove off. Its not that rare to see wild pigs grubbing on the beach.

I’m thinking that this last swell, didn’t quite meet up to my expectations? I truly was expecting to see 8-10 foot roping waves with corduroy lines to the horizon! Over the past few days there were some spots that looked like that, but I didn’t see them, or just wasn’t willing to drive hundreds of miles on the chance of scoring. I do a lot of driving in this quest to find those idyllic conditions, burn up a lot of gas, gone through some tires and hit a deer doing $3300 worth of damage to my beloved Honda!
So this session at Robots, was the best one I saw in the last four days. The weather was perfect, ocean was glassy all day, and there were plenty of waves to be had by all.
Stand out surfing was being done by Jake Chancer, Cayson Peterson, Eric Knowles, Tim Puckett, Bernie Pigott, Dennis Rizo and a host of others. Check out these images, enjoy the show, and don’t forget what I always say… “Stay Stoked and Stay Forever Young…..Da Lieb”
