We asked surfer Dan Hamlin from Orcutt, California, about his favorite boards (for board reference, Dan is 5’11 and 150 pounds).
Surf Wanderer: What is your current favorite board?
Dan Hamlin: I don’t know if I have a favorite board, it just depends on the conditions. I ride Robert Weiner surfboards and pretty much every board I’ve gotten from him over the past 3 or 4 years has been excellent. If I had to just pick one though it would probably be a 5’8 ½” x 2 3/16” Black Diamond model. The board is so versatile, it has worked great in everything from thigh hi dribblers to well overhead barreling waves. It’s just been one of the best everyday boards that I’ve had.
Recently I asked Robert to shape me a retro twin fin but with some modern design elements and that thing is soo fun. I think it’s good to mix it up now and then; it keeps things fresh and helps you have an open mind when it comes to equipment.
SW: What kind of waves do you mostly surf in?
DH: I reckon I mostly surf beach break, but we live on a pretty diverse coastline so you end up surfing everything. That’s why I liked the Black Diamond so much; it seems to go good in just about all types of waves.
SW: If your not surfing that board, what do surf instead/want to surf instead?
DH: Lately I’ve been riding a Black Dump Truck by Robert Weiner. It’s the same as the Black Diamond but with a squash tail instead of the diamond tail. Again, it’s just a super good everyday board. To be honest, I’m not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to board design, so it’s such a blessing having Robert shape my boards. I don’t really have to think too much about it, I just tell him what I’m looking for in the board and somehow he knows exactly what to shape.
