We asked surfer Tyler Morris from Oxnard, California, about his favorite boards (for board reference, Tyler is 6’2″ and 185 pounds).
Surf Wanderer: What is your current favorite board?
Tyler Morris: Matt Sparks (M.d.s.* Surfboards), The Del Playa model, 5’10” x 19 ¼ x 2 3/8 (EPS). Best for any surf from ankle to head high. Light single concave throughout the nose to tail with medium tail rocker, followed by the perfect amount nose rocker. Most of the board is flat through the middle for speed making it great for down the line, top to bottom surfing (Also insane for airs). Quick, responsive, forgiving, and brings fun and ease back to surfing.
SW: What kind of waves do you mostly surf in?
TM: Mostly closed out windy beach breaks 50% of the time. But I definitely stay loyal to a few gem sand point breaks close to home. I’m a sucker for barrels.
SW: If your not surfing that board, what do surf instead/want to surf instead?
TM: Recently a friend of mine shaped himself this wide, round nose, swallowtail quad. It’s about 22” wide throughout the entire board and is the ugliest thing ever. But it is one of the most fun boards I have ever ridden in my life. Paddles like a longboard and surfs like a classic fish. I want Matt to shape me a board similar to it but a little more refined. I also shred the Wavestorm soft tops, they are so fun to mess around on.
