The waves on the Central Coast are very good during the Winter months, and there is no better place to watch the action than right above them.

Reason #7 to Visit SeaCrest Oceanfront Resort : Wine Tasting in SLO County.

There is an ecstatic explosion of beautiful vineyards that have popped up in the hills of San Luis Obispo County in the last 15 years.  Now, you can wine taste all through San Luis Obispo, Arroyo Grande, and Paso Robles, and still stay right on the waters edge at the SeaCrest Oceanfront resort.

The Hiking all around Pismo Beach in San Luis County is amazing.  There are so many trials from the coast to the inland valleys.  It would take multiple trips to this area to ever hike them all!

The Pure Stoke Camp program is funded by Surfing for Hope.  This youth program provides a safe and fun environment for a child to experience the healing energy of the beach and ocean.  This day at the beach includes surf lessons, beach games, lunch and supportive instructions to help children and adolescents cope with the stress of their own, or loved ones, battle with cancer.   Our 5th annual Surfing for Hope benefit is coming up on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1. We will be having our 7th Pure Stoke Surf Camp on the same day as our surf contest, Oct. 1.  We will honor our campers on the Pismo pier during this event.
All proceeds from our yearly event go to the Hearst Cancer Resource Center except with our surfboard raffle and the Pure Stoke Heat in our longboard contest which goes to help support the children’s program.
Peace, Love and Aloha,
Bob V.

Learn to Surf!

If you’ve never tried surfing in your life, there is nothing more exhilarating in the world.  You don’t have to surf everyday to understand the rush of “catching a wave and sitting on top of the world!”  You can ride roller coasters all over the world, but nothing is so transcendental and give one such an authentic rush as ride a wave.  Learn to surf down on the sand below the hotel.

Every town has a grip of local rippas, and SLO county has no shortage.  Recently, local Mike Schwartz has spent a lot of time with one of the best photographers in the area, Jon Reis.  Up and down the coast they’ve built a great friendship searching for waves before and after work, scoring big time along the way.

If you’ve seen Schwartz out in the line-up, you’ve probably noticed his calm demeanor and his mean forehand attack and backhand blasts.  A hard-working local who represents the area’s best bit of South County ripping, give Mikey a hoot the next time you see him.

It’s time to dream, time to explore, time to get away.  It’s time, for Oregon.  Why?  I don’t know.  There are so many places in the United States to travel, so many places in the world.  However, something about open land, big tall trees, and the escape of nowhere that seems to be…Oregon.

Now a father of two, car travel is a great way to travel because of the lessened expense to take the entire family further distances away from home.  Air travel will come, yet, with two young children, a journey for the body and the mind to separate us from the everyday routine of work, school, play, homework, cooking meals, paying bills, going to way too many birthday parties, and trying to somehow save up to pay for the every expanding list of American Holidays, leaving on a wondrous wander is the lust of my heart, and a road trip can definitely sooth that dream.

First is the dream, next is the plan.  Oregon, a place so near, yet so far away from a Californian’s scope of usual travel ideals, has recently be shown to me as a place for the explorer, a place for the person who is looking for solitude and peace out on the open road, a place for the athlete in search of constant hiking, biking, surfing, sight seeing, and mountain sport activities.

If you’re like me, vacation is so important for the mind, yet, the body can’t be left out.  Because my daily regimen involves about 1-3 hours of sports a day, as is the same for my wife…and kids (4 and 7yrs old), going to Oregon is not and can not be a sedentary act.  For if we tend to explore, we will drive to get there, yet must explore within the confines of athletic endeavors.

How far will we venture from our home in California?  Well, we’re not sure exactly.  As long as we find open freedoms and places to “play,” (be athletes), we may traverse much of the state.  For this is the beginning of the journey, which is the dream state.  It is where the emotions lead to searching, and the searching becomes plans.

Fellow Surf Wanderers-

In January, my best friend Sean Lynn, was a passenger in a vehicle that was in a terrible accident where he suffered a C5 spinal cord injury, leaving him quadriplegic. Sean and I grew up in San Clemente, CA together where we learned the stoke that surfing brings, especially when shared with a good friend. We sharpened our teeth at Trestles, local beach breaks, as well as Baja, and our friendship grew. I moved from San Clemente to the Central Coast in 1998, but we’ve remained best friends and surf travel companions. While our hopes for recovery are high and our friendship eternal, I fear we will never again be able to share the same experiences that forged our friendship in the first place.

More importantly, Sean and his loving wife Sienna are expecting identical twin baby boys in July.  They are in need of community support to help them with Sean’s insane medical expenses, current and future, that are associated with this type of injury. Anything you can do to help support my best friend and another Surfwanderer would mean everything to me.  Here is a link to Sean’s fundraising website for information about ways you can help the Lynn family.  https://m.helphopelive.org/campaign/4438

Thank you for your time,

Ryan “Allsy” Allshouse up in SLO county is good friends with Deep Magazine writer/Surfboard tester and my good friend Shawn Tracht.  Shawn and Ryan go way back and since they’re good friends, and the same size, Ryan, has made sure to steal Shawn’s boards away from him every time Shawn show’s up testing a new craft.

Well, Tracht told me that Allsy took this board from him to test it for “one wave.”  Low and behold, now it’s been two months and Allsy won’t give it back!

I have to admit, it’s so fun as a shaper to have someone enjoy the art you create.  Meeting Allsy last summer and hearing of his great sessions on a shape that I love is the best part of shaping.  Allsy has gotten a lot of good waves and from what Tracht has told me, a ton of compliments while riding it.  Apparently…
